Where the Big Five Share Land With the World's Most Considered Safari Lodges
South Africa contains multitudes. The Kruger, one of the largest and most celebrated game reserves on earth. The Sabi Sand, where the wildlife encounters are so frequent and so close they begin to feel like privilege rather than luck. Cape Town, dramatic and cosmopolitan. The Winelands, unhurried and extraordinary.

48,000 Square Kilometres of Protected Wilderness, and That Is Just the Beginning
The Kruger National Park is one of the largest game reserves on earth, and one of the most biodiverse. Lions, leopards, elephants, rhino, buffalo, the Big Five move freely across a landscape that has been protected for over a century. To the west, the Sabi Sand Game Reserve shares an unfenced border with the Kruger, allowing wildlife to roam across both areas without restriction. It is here, in this private reserve, that some of the most intimate and extraordinary safari experiences in the world take place.
But South Africa does not begin and end in the bush. Cape Town is one of the most dramatically positioned cities on earth, Table Mountain, the Atlantic Seaboard, a restaurant and wine culture that belongs in the same conversation as anywhere in the world. The Winelands, an hour from the city, are unhurried and quietly extraordinary. The Garden Route stretches along a coastline.
What distinguishes South Africa at the highest level is not any single thing. It is the breadth of what is possible, and the standard of what is available.

Zameera CollectionWhat to Know About South Africa
South Africa has 12 official languages, with English widely used in luxury travel and safari settings. The currency is the South African rand (ZAR). Card payment is standard, and lodges settle extras to your account.
South Africa Standard Time, GMT+2, with no daylight saving.
Game viewing is strong year-round. The dry winter months from May to September concentrate wildlife around water and offer clear, cool mornings. The green summer season from November to April brings lush scenery, young animals and big afternoon storms. Cape Town runs on the opposite rhythm, at its best in the southern summer.
Many nationalities enter South Africa visa-free for short stays. Check current requirements for your passport before travel, and ensure at least two blank passport pages.
International flights arrive into OR Tambo International, Johannesburg, or Cape Town International. Scheduled Federal Air shuttles and light aircraft connect Johannesburg to the private airstrips serving the Sabi Sand and the Kruger concessions, followed by short road transfers.
Safari dress is practical and understated, in neutral tones, with comfortable walking shoes, a warm layer for early drives and lighter clothing for midday heat. Malaria prophylaxis is advised for the Sabi Sand and Kruger; consult your doctor.

What the Sabi Sand Teaches You About Paying Attention
The Big Five is a concept most people arrive with and leave behind. What stays with you from a week in the Sabi Sand is something quieter, and considerably harder to explain.

Cape Town Belongs in a Different Conversation to Other Cities
Table Mountain. The Atlantic Seaboard. A restaurant culture that has no right to be this good. We went to understand why people who have been everywhere keep coming back.
