Rwanda

Ancient Forest. Volcanic Highland. Mountain Gorilla.

Rwanda is one of the most extraordinary destinations on earth, and one of the least understood. Ancient forest, volcanic highlands, and access to the mountain gorilla, an encounter so rare and so disarming that it consistently redefines what people believe travel is capable of. A country that has rebuilt itself with remarkable intention, and whose commitment to conservation and quality is visible at every level.

The Destination

Around 1,063 Mountain Gorillas Remain on Earth

All of them live in a network of protected parks crossing Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. To spend an hour with a habituated family in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park, within metres, in near silence, in their forest, is an encounter that has no equivalent in wildlife travel. It cannot be manufactured or replicated. It simply has to be experienced.

Rwanda has deliberately limited access to protect what it has. Trekking permits are strictly capped and priced to reflect the rarity of the experience. This will never be a crowded destination. That is entirely by design.

Beyond the gorillas, Rwanda is a country that has been rebuilt with remarkable intention. The highlands are dramatic. The national parks are among the most carefully managed on the continent.

Before You Go

What to Know About Rwanda

Kinyarwanda, English and French are official languages in Rwanda. English is widely spoken in luxury lodges and tourism settings. The local currency is the Rwandan franc, though high-end travel arrangements are often quoted in US dollars.

Central Africa Time, GMT+2.

Rwanda can be visited throughout the year. June to September usually brings the firmest trekking conditions and highest demand, with December to February another strong window. Gorilla permits and private exclusive treks should be secured as early as possible.

Visa requirements depend on nationality. Many travellers can obtain a visa on arrival or apply online before travel, while some nationalities have visa-free access. Guests should check the latest requirements before departure.

Guests usually arrive through Kigali International Airport. The road transfer north to Volcanoes National Park takes roughly two and a half to three hours depending on conditions. Helicopter transfers can be arranged in either direction, weather permitting.

Trekking requires practical clothing rather than safari styling. Bring well-worn waterproof hiking boots, long trousers, a light waterproof jacket, warm layers, gloves, gaiters, sun protection and neutral colours. Evenings at the lodges are relaxed and refined.
